I'm really not sure. I "became" Super Jayhawk in 1989, but didn't even find out about the fandom until ten years later, at FC '99, where I showed up with Super Jayhawk 1.0, which was made in 1997. At the time, birds were pretty rare, but I know Legend the Griffin Bard was there, and he had been around for years-- so it might depend on if you count gryphons as birds. Also whether you count "being a bird" as when you first took on the character online, or when you actually got the fursuit.

Actually, I'm a mythical creature and a bird too..

Pacer does a lot more mascot work than me-- I'm the behind-the-scenes guy at gigs for the most part, I haven't actually fursuited at a gig in awhile now.
I've been the one hauling the supplies, setting up the tent, making sure the suiters are taken care of, and making sure we have enough escorts to cover our characters. I think the last time Super Jayhawk appeared at a gig was like two years ago.

Jayhawk gets the First bird award as to what kind of avian you might be you are still a bird.

Pacer would get the first Mythical creature award.

That counts too also you know.

Actually Jayhawks are technically mythical creatures as well. The Jayhawk was originally created as a cross between a blue jay and a sparrow hawk, which would be kind of an improbable combination (like a rabbit marrying a wolf or something).

Haven't had a chance to post about the new Super Jayhawk yet... been working through life issues ever since the con. Will probably get an entry up before long in time for my appearance at MegaPlex.

Here's a sneak preview if you're curious in the meantime. I did make an appearance at FC 2008, although it was a short one since I was so insanely busy at the con.

darn it, I thought it was one vote per conference per day, rather than one vote per day PERIOD! Well, at least Big Jay is in the Top Ten!

It's one vote per day per IP address. So find a different location and vote there (work vs. home).

The toon pic on the mascot splash page is impressive, but how come that nut got on there and not the Jayhawk! (is a nut really a mascot?)
