Mac OS X Leopard update mess-up

So last night I ended up applying a Software Update for Mac OS X Leopard to my MacBook Pro-- it was something like an update for the graphics hardware. When it rebooted, it gives the Apple logo and then powers off the whole system, and won't boot any more. Has anyone had this problem on their Macs before? I know enough OS X to get around on the command line, but I'm not familiar with the system-level underpinnings of where to look in OS X under the hood like I do in Linux.

Anyone else seen this?
